What generator load management and load shedding mean
Load management is the logic that keeps a generator from being asked to do more than it can. Load shedding is what that logic does: when demand approaches the unit’s capacity, it temporarily drops the lowest-priority loads so the essential ones keep running.
In practice, that looks like this. The generator is carrying your well pump, refrigeration, lights and furnace. The air conditioner tries to start. Instead of overloading and shutting down, the system holds the air conditioner off for a moment, or drops the electric water heater, and everything keeps running. When demand falls, the deferred load comes back automatically.
You do not manage it. It manages itself, continuously, in the background.
How load shedding lets a smaller generator do the job
Homes rarely run everything at once. Peak demand is short and spiky — a well pump kicking on while the dryer runs and the air conditioner starts. Sizing a generator for that worst-case instant means paying for capacity you use for seconds a day.
Load management sizes the system for realistic simultaneous demand instead. That usually delivers:
- Lower equipment cost. A smaller unit costs less to buy.
- Lower installation cost. Smaller gas or propane supply requirements and simpler siting.
- Lower fuel use. Important during multi-day outages on a fixed propane tank.
- Quieter operation. A smaller unit is easier to live with, and easier on neighbors and setbacks.
- Easier placement. Mountain lots with clearance and snow constraints benefit from a smaller footprint.

Do you still need a whole-house generator?
