How long will a standby generator run during an outage? It is the most common question we get, and the honest answer is that the generator is rarely the limiting factor. Fuel supply and load are.
Here is how to work out a realistic number for your property.
A standby generator connected to a large propane tank or a natural gas line can run for days. One connected to a small tank that was already half empty cannot.
Consumption depends on how hard the unit is working. A generator carrying a light essential load sips fuel compared with the same unit running a whole house including air conditioning. As a planning rule, size the tank around a multi-day outage in the season when your loads are heaviest — for most properties in our area, that is winter heating.
Two practical cautions. Propane tanks are not usually filled to 100 percent, so usable volume is less than the nameplate. And once a major storm closes roads, deliveries stop. Going into winter with a nearly full tank is the cheapest insurance available.
The more you ask the generator to power, the faster it burns fuel. This is where the sizing conversation and the run-time conversation meet.
A system backing up heat, well pump, refrigeration and a few circuits will run far longer on the same tank than one carrying the entire panel. Many homeowners choose a middle path: back up everything, but be disciplined about what actually runs during a long outage.

Extended run time is where the cooling system shows up.
Air-cooled units are designed for outages measured in hours. They will run longer, but sustained days at high load is demanding for them.
Liquid-cooled units are built for extended cycle times, which is why they appear on larger homes and commercial sites. We cover the differences in detail in our guide to Kohler generator products.
A generator running for several days continuously will eventually need attention — oil level in particular on longer outages. Units that started the outage with fresh oil, a good battery and clean filters go much further than units that were overdue for service.
This is the quiet reason maintenance matters: it does not just determine whether the generator starts, it determines how long it keeps going.
Public Safety Power Shutoffs are a different planning problem from storm outages. They are announced in advance, they can last multiple days, and they happen in fire weather rather than snow.
The advantage is warning. When a shutoff is announced, check your fuel level, confirm the unit is in AUTO, and clear anything blocking the enclosure. Those three steps prevent most of the failures we see during announced events.
A generic answer is not worth much. The real calculation uses your tank size, your actual load, your unit’s consumption rate and the season. We can work that out with you, and if the answer is uncomfortable, the fix is usually a larger tank rather than a larger generator.
